Heading into the offseason, the 49ers were originally slated to have seven draft picks, but they traded their own third-round pick for Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa to bolster the interior of their defensive line.
With that move, the 49ers had one first-round pick (No. 27), one second-round pick (No. 58), and four fourth-round picks (Nos. 127, No. 133, No. 138, and No. 139) at their disposal.
Original trade terms for 49ers and Cowboys’ Osa Odighizuwa swap
- San Francisco 49ers receive: DT Osa Odighizuwa
- Dallas Cowboys receive: 2026 third-round pick (No. 92 overall)
How did Osa Odighizuwa play in 2025 for the Cowboys?
Defensive tackle was a key need for the 49ers this offseason, as they looked for a veteran to pair with rising second-year players Alfred Collins and C.J. West. Odighizuwa fills that hole.
The biggest issue the 49ers had last year was with their pass rush. Odighizuwa led all Cowboys with 52 pressures last year, recording a pass-rush win rate of 13.6 percent, according to PFF. He also had just one missed tackle on the season, while recording 14 run stops.
Durability was key as well, as Odighizuwa played all 17 games for a fourth straight year. The 49ers needed a pass rusher and got one who was in the upper echelon for interior defensive linemen in pass rush win rate and pressure rate. It was a steep price, but a notable move for a player entering his age-28 season.
Who did the Cowboys select with their pick from the Osa Odighizuwa trade?
The pick happens at 92 overall. We will update as soon as the selection is made.
How did the 49ers fare in the Osa Odighizuwa trade?
Of course, we’ll have to see what comes out of the No. 92 pick, but the 49ers had a surplus of fourth-round picks, which gave them the ability to move one of their mid-round selections for a need.
Odighizuwa comes at a very reasonable price for a quality pass-rushing defensive tackle, and the 49ers could look to keep him fresh and rotate him with the bodies they have at the position.
San Francisco had the requisite cap space for a move like this, and a veteran at the position was a necessity after striking out in free agency on one of the few quality defensive tackles.
Odighizuwa will be tasked with leading the group in 2026, but this looks like a quality move on paper and one that comes with flexibility next offseason, as there’s no more guaranteed money on the defensive tackle’s contract that the 49ers owe.
